Far reaching benefits of a healthy mind in a healthy body
We’d all like to live longer, and enjoy good mental and physical health. There is no secret formula when it comes to health and longevity, but I believe that there is some basis in the old adage ‘a healthy mind equals a healthy body’.
Taking care of the basics
Ensuring that our bodies are fit and healthy and looked after to the best of our ability is our duty. You wouldn’t expect your car to run well if you neglected it or gave it the wrong fuel, and your body depends on you to give it the best possible care.
The common sense diet
Food is the body’s fuel. Your body requires a regular supply of food to maintain health, to repair cells and tissue, to boost the immune system and to provide energy. My goal is not to provide you with a ‘fits everyone’ type of diet but to offer a few tips that will help you to achieve the healthy, fit body you deserve.
Try to avoid pre-packaged foods and those containing preservatives. Your body needs a good variety of protein, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals, fats and water. Carbohydrates or starchy foods such as potatoes, bread and pasta are often considered fattening, but they’re a good source of energy and you should eat a portion with each meal. Protein creates the body’s building blocks and lean meat and fish are excellent sources. Your body needs fats and olive oil is one of my favourites. Even when dieting you can include small quantities. You should also aim for at least five portions of fruit and vegetables to provide your body with essential vitamins and minerals and to boost your immune system and try to substitute processed sugar for fruit sugar or honey. Lastly, water is essential for life, so drink 1.5 to 2 litres each day.
Health and happiness
Exercise is vital if you wish to keep your body in tip top condition. It’s been said that a sedentary lifestyle does as much damage as smoking. The benefits of regular exercise are countless so go for a walk, swim a few times a week or join a gym or fitness class.
A healthy body promotes serenity and peace. Everyone has a truly unique relationship with their own body, and it’s important to be aware of your limits. A stress free body leads to a healthy mind, and though it’s not easy you can learn to control your emotions. Work on empathy and self esteem and you’ll have a better relationship with others. Be optimistic – pessimism rarely produces good results while optimism attracts positive energy and helps you to achieve a balanced mind and body.
