“Morning Magic” – is early rising the key to success?

“The world belongs to early risers”. It’s not by any means a new saying, but it has been developed by Hal Elrod in his book “The Miracle Morning”.

According to this American personal development coach, anybody who wants to revolutionise their life and realise their dreams needs to leap out of bed early! Or even very early, because the author urges us to get up at 5.30am. This strategy, which is very fashionable in the States, consists of getting up at least an hour or two before the usual start of your day, so as to devote time to meditation, doing sport, writing, reading, etc, this being the key to success and happiness.

Peaceful hours in which to think about yourself

The author adds that the world doesn’t belong to people who simply get out of bed early, but to those who use the time saved from sleeping to reflect on their objectives in life. In this book, Hal Elrod tells us that the common factor linking the greatest names, the people who rack up success after success, is their habit of getting up before dawn so as to have the calm, peaceful time of the early morning (no computer, no smartphone, no television, no rowdy children, no exterior noise) purely to themselves so as to do an activity, increase their knowledge, meditate, and work on projects.

The six parts of the “miracle morning”

To improve every aspect of life, Hal Elrod proposes six steps to carry out in the morning. You can do them in whatever order suits you best, for at least 10 minutes:

  1. Be calm and meditate.
  2. Make positive affirmations.
  3. Visualise what you want to get or succeed at.
  4. This is the time to go for a run or do some exercises.
  5. Increase your knowledge and get informed.
  6. Write a journal, plan, organise.

Of course, the critics will say that in some trades and professions people already get up pretty early to go to work, and probably don’t have the time to spend on personal fulfilment. For other people, though, and in particular for people who loaf in bed until the last minute, and as a result find the day too short to get everything done, the method has a lot going for it.
