Roux at the Landau has installed itself in the prestigious Langham Hotel, in the heart of the elegant Marylebone district. When I walked into this hotel, which was built in 1865, I knew at once that I would find dining in its restaurant to be a unique gastronomic experience, because a successful dinner starts with an appeal to the eye.
It is impossible not to surrender to the charm of a magnificent setting which David Collins, an interior designer based in London, has refreshed with panache, creating a decor that is both chic and relaxed. My eye was immediately caught by the majestic curving counter, in Art Deco style, which stands in the centre of the room and around which one can taste a variety of snacks. I then noticed the beauty of the two brass chandeliers which create much of the room’s attraction, before spotting the fridge and its French and British cheeses. That restored my sense of priorities!
Although the undeniable cachet of the decor held my attention, this fascination was soon thrust aside by the skill displayed in the cooking and presentation of the food. In this glamorous setting, Michel Roux provides refined cuisine, fully authentic, made up of delicate tastes with French influences. Just running through the menu made my mouth water. The work of this chef is modern and refined, blending the excellence of French cuisine and British ingredients. You will be delighted by everything, from the snacks at the central counter to the desserts, not forgetting the cheeses, which you absolutely must try.
A city break is not complete, in my view, without a little fine dining, and this breathtaking culinary interlude just confirmed my opinion.
The staff are also very attentive, discreet and effective, giving the Roux at the Landau a clear claim to be one of the most prestigious restaurants in London.
